Hartman

Founded in 1909, Hartman was a bustling city of around 5,500 residents in the 1920s and 1930s. Home to a thriving sugar beet factory, a grain cooperative. A railroad ran through the town connecting to the Co-op and the factory for more effective commerce, however in the 1940s the town's population began to decline.

Hartman is located North of C-196. The old Hartman Gymnasium, circa 1938 is associated with New Deal programs in Prowers County. The building is an example of Works Progress Administration construction in Hartman and one of only a few such projects in the county. Its use as a community center continues to contribute to the social history of Hartman.
